I adapted my "I Love Morse Code." mini collection into a standalone piece, titled "Identity Encoded". It was submitted to and selected for the World Art Day exhibition at Visual Arts Mississauga.
This year's theme of SEE ART, DO ART, BE ART explored topics such as growth, community, identity, and artistic expression. Naturally, as a geeky artist, I wanted to talk about my geeky identity, and so the concept of this piece was born. It was going to be interactive, where viewers can have fun decoding my little morse code phrase at the bottom.
I did ponder for quite some time what phrase would perfectly suit the occasion as well as fit into the space available. Naming the piece was also no easy feat. Since there was no room for a description, I needed to convey the theme of my identity and invite viewers to decode, all in the title. I don't know if my mission was accomplished. When I visited the exhibit, the only people I saw trying to decode my message were my own family. Perhaps it's too much to expect people to spend time solving a puzzle at an art exhibition? Who knows. But maybe this perfectly illustrates how my identity is truly unique to me.
Check out the other beautiful pieces next to me!
I was very honoured to be spotlighted on the SDR blog, where I've read about some of my favourite artists that I totally look up to! Especially since SDR closed its doors not long after, so I was one of the last designers to be featured. But for as long as the site still lives on the internet, you can read my spotlight here.
